The Singles Tournament for the Spring 2008 season took place yesterday, and I think most people would agree that it was a big success. Despite the last-minute change of venue, 148 people managed to find their way to the event. Of the 148 people who showed, 105 made it in to the draw. We got started about 30 minute late, as many showed up just before 2:00. The trophy presentations went on at 7:00 before a pretty packed house, and the event ended just before midnight.
Trophies were awarded to Cocktail Club, Country Road, Down Under, Happiness, Hillary Bar, Oasis 1, Oasis 2, Olive Oyl, The Players, Rack Em Up, Roadhouse, Sports Academy, and Sports Corner. Lek from The Green Room and Ying from McAndrews/The Ale House each walked away with the WooKen spoon, and Jamie from Olive Oyl got the good sportsmanship award.
As always seems to be the case, the competition proved to be both fun and competitive, Bier from Cho Cho bar beat Boy from Sports Academy for 3rd place The final was between Paul from The Players, last season's champion, and Tee from Hillary Bar. The league tradition of never having anyone repeat as league champion was upheld, as Tee prevailed in what proved to be an entertaining final.
91 door prizes were awarded. 57 were offered by the league, and 34 were supplied by the participating bars. Gingerasia, an additional new sponsor to the league, was there to give a short speech, and provided 40 T-Shirts to the event. Just about everyone walked away with something. The day proved to be a great end to the 8-Ball season.
All that remains for the spring season now is to do a repeat next week for 9-Ball. The spring 2008 Singles Tournament for 9-Ball will be held next Saturday, June 21st, at the Ball In Hand at the same Soi 4 location. The starting time will once again be 2:00, but I am asking people to show up closer to 1:00 so that we can have enough time to work out the draw. The attendance, the draw, and the door priizes are all expected to exceed the 8-Ball numbers, and it will be the last league event before we start this all over again for the fall season.
