WEEK 5 UPDATE PDF Print
Written by Mark D
Saturday, 28 March 2009

bpl_news.png The week 5 results are now all in and have been sent off to Will.  They should be updated to the site some time today.  If anyone sees any mistakes, please let me know.  This includes spelling mistakes on names, as well as statistical errors.  Most are easy to correct.

The Spring 2008 season is going well, and I think most people are really enjoying the league.  The problems so far have been pretty minimal.  I want to remind people, though, that it is up to everyone to know and understand the rules.  We are a recreational bar league, and a lot of drinking goes on during matches.  Good Sportsmanship is not only one of the rules, but goes a long way beyond a win.  It is a team captain's responsibility to reign in any of his players who may be over the top, and I expect them to be able to work out any minor problems that surface during a match.

Through week 5, 249 people have played in the 8-Ball.  There are no individual stats for 9-Ball, but I would guess the number of players to be a bit higher.

Steve from The Players is doing a weekly blog on his teams play this season, and a link to it is on this site.  Feel free to have a read.

After week 7, the league will take a 1-week break for Songkran.  For anyone who is interested, we will be holding a mid-season tournament at The Ball In Hand on Saturday, April 11th.  Attendance is optional, but anyone interested can play.  We will be playing the 9-Ball format, but alternating 8-Ball and 9-Ball.  We will begin at 2:00 PM, and go on pretty much as long as we want.   People can enter as a team, or come as individuals and be assigned to one.

8_ball.pngThe standings in 8-Ball are determined by points.  2 points are awarded for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.  As Interdivisional games do not count in the standings, the current standings will not be showing all teams having played the same number of games until week 7.  In the event of a tie at the end of the season, the winner will be determined by the head-to-head records between those teams that are tied.

There will be no playoffs this season in 8-Ball.  The divisions were purposefully assorted along competitive lines, and I think the current records reflect that.  There will no longer be a need to "qualify" players for post-season play, which has been a problem in the past.

The scoresheet collection has been better than in the past, but I would really appreciate having them by wednesday so that this site can be updated by fridays.  The information needs to be entered and sent on to Will so that the stats can be updated and loaded on to this site.

9_ball.pngTeams are doing well at understanding the 9-Ball format, and the initial confusion seems to have subsided.  Please be reminded, though, that the home team puts its 4 names up first.  After that, the team that is ahead should enter first.  This is designed to keep the games close.  It seems to be working, as there have been 10 21-20 matches through week 5.  The green division at the moment has 1 team at 3-2, 5 at 2-2, and 1 team at 2-3, so things are really tight.  A name can be put up twice in a given round of four, but that person playing twice will not be eligible to play in the next round of four.

The standings in 9-Ball will be determined by record.  The winner of the division will be the team with the best win/loss record in matches. Overall legs will count in the event of a draw.

There are no scoresheets in 9-Ball.  All I need is for someone to SMS the final score to me.

If there are any errors in there, please blame Mark, just insist it is his fault for not being gentle enough with his computer! Tongue out

I will correct the errors, if any.

SPRING 2009 SEASON PDF Print
Written by Mark D
Saturday, 07 March 2009

Sorry for the delay in making this first post of the season, but I wanted to be able to say that everything is now in place.  After several bugs, mistakes, typos and formulaic meltdowns, the standings can now be loaded in.  Please have a look.  There might be a few minor glitches, but it will eventually be all sorted out. Please note also that the players stats are only being done in 8-Ball.

Scoresheets: Please try to get the 8-Ball scoresheets in to me as soon as possible so that this site can be updated by the weekend.  All I need in 9-Ball is the final team score.

Interdivisional Matches:  Please note that the Interdivisional matches are NOT being counted in the standings this season.  The competitive disparity in the matches was too great to be done fairly.  Play the matches and have fun with it.

Teams:  There are 28 8-Ball teams and 28 9-Ball teams this season.  Several prospective teams wanted in, but could not give me a firm committment until after the start-up deadline.

Match Formats:  8-Ball is being played in the same format as in the past.   9-Ball is being played using a new format.  I have been receiving a lot of comments, both pro and con, from people regarding their preferences.  We are locked into this for this season.  I will prepare a questionaire to be handed out at the season-ending Singles Tournaments, in which everyone will be able to state their feelings after having played an entire season.  The results will indicate how we will likely proceed in the future.

THANK YOU:  This first post cannot be complete until I properly thank those people that stepped up to make the season happen.  The Pool Committee did a great job this season of coming together and giving me the help I needed.  The meetings were intelligent, spirited, and a fine example of putting function over consumption, at least temporarily.  The committee conists of Henning & Keith (Ball In Hand), Jack (Hideaway), John (Corner bar), Long (Hillary Bar), Neil (Happiness/Sport 22), Nick (Popeyes), Paul (Det 5), Peder (Moonshine), and Steve (Cho Cho Bar).  Linkka is currently charging his batteries back in Finland, and Petri is still going native up in Khon Kaen, but their contributions are not forgotten.  I would also like to thank Steve (Moonshine) and Jane (Crazy Hot) for providing help with the stats.  Last, but certainly not least, I want to Thank Will for his continuing invaluable contributions.  This site is really his baby, and he is the one who usually has to deal with the dirty diapers.  The baby is doing fine.
